PE

At Hawley Primary School we believe Physical Education (PE) is a crucial and fundamental part of the curriculum. We strive to ensure all children participate in a wide range of physical activities both in and out of school. Children at Hawley thoroughly enjoy developing and performing their physical ability in PE lessons and through festivals, competitions and matches.

We aim to:

  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and positive mental health
  • Encourage a love of physical activity
  • Develop good sportsmanship and leadership skills.

Dance, gymnastics, outside sports and swimming are statutory elements of the Primary Curriculum. All of these forms of physical activity are integral to our Creative Curriculum and are used to develop children’s confidence, competence, character, creativity and co-ordination.

PE lessons

Children at Hawley take part in at least 2 hours of PE a week and sometimes complete full days of activity. PE lessons are taught by class teachers or our specialist PE teacher. Sometimes we welcome SGO (School Games Officer) or local Secondary PE Specialist Teachers to teach alongside our staff team. As well as twice-weekly timetabled PE lessons, each class takes part in dance days when the children spend a day with Mrs Spilsbury and their class teacher developing and polishing their skills, culminating with a performance for parents.

In Year 4, the children travel to the local swimming pool and are taught to swim by qualified swimming instructors.

In the Summer Term KS2, children participate in the Record Breakers scheme in Athletics whereby their jumps, throws and runs are recorded with awards presented to those leading the records.

All classes also take part in The Golden Mile at least 3 times a week.

The PE and Sports Premium funding has enabled us to employ experienced coaches and Mrs Spilsbury, our specialist PE teacher, to work with the children and alongside class teachers teaching a range of sports, athletics, dance or gymnastics each term. Sports Clubs and Competitions

We have a wide range of sports clubs in Hawley for both KS1 and KS2, at lunchtime and after school. Over the course of the year, these include multi-skills, dance, netball, ‘Ball Up’ basketball, boy’s football, girl’s football, rounders, cricket and playground games.

We compete in a boy’s football league, a girl’s football league and a netball tournament, and participate in many competitions and sporting events throughout the year, including the Gremlin Dance Challenge for KS2, dodgeball, soft archery, curling, fun runs and sports hall athletics. We also participate in cricket and rounders tournaments, as well as sports festivals for multi-skills, quick sticks, tag-rugby and non-league football for both Ks1 and KS2.

Over the past couple of years, we have been successful in many of the competitions we have entered! Recent achievements include:

  • Finishing 3rd in a basketball tournament out of 10 schools
  • Finishing 4th in Hampshire Schools Athletics at Aldershot Military Stadium out of 8 schools.
  • Winning ‘Best Dance to a Soundtrack’ in the KS2 Gremlin Dance Challenge at Princes Theatre in Aldershot
  • Achieving many 1st place medals in Sports Hall Athletics for Javelin, Triple Jump, Long Jump and Speed Bounce
  • Finishing 2nd in the Boys Football League

We are proud to say that PE is a very popular and enjoyable subject for all children at Hawley Primary School.
